It's For the Birds Blog Hop!

Welcome to my blog and my day of the Birdie Blog Hop! Thank you for hosting another awesome hop Madame Samm and Mary

This is my second blog hop and I'm sure it's going to be as much fun as the April Showers Hop!

I LOVE birds!  We have a fountain in our backyard and it so enjoyable to watch the little sparrows and finch and hummingbirds come to play and splash around.  They are all very "chatty" and it's so relaxing to listen to them "talk" to each other.  Sometimes there are as many as six playing around at once. The little birdies are so sweet and innocent and I'm glad they visit!

Here is Mr. Robin. Isn't he beautiful!

 Splish Splash!

Sorry for the blurry photos.  I took them with a zoom from my back door so I didn't scare them away!
We also have an African Gray Parrot that lives with us, however he is in NO WAY innocent!
name is Rascal and you can read about him here.

Last September we took a trip to Oregon and visited the little town of Sisters and the Stitchin' Post Quilt Shop. Every July they host the largest annual outdoor quilt show in the country.

I purchased an appliqué pattern with little Chickadees. I really didn't think I would ever actually use the pattern.  I had never done appliqué and didn't really want to learn - I just thought the little birds were cute! But when the Birdie Hop was announced I knew I was in and it was the perfect opportunity to learn something new.

I LOVE the way this little quilt turned out! It's cute and sweet - just like my backyard friends!
I have to admit that it was a bit challenging. Lots of little pieces to cut and stitch. I made a few mistakes, but actually enjoyed the process of watching the little Chickadees come to life. It was fun and I'm really happy with my little mini quilt!

Close up of the little Chickadees!
The original pattern did not have the leaves. I added them because
I thought the tree needed a touch of Spring.     I took the following pictures outside in my backyard. You can see the difference in the colors with the sun shining on the quiltie.

I used mostly scraps that I had I my stash, but did purchase the fabric for the borders. I also created corner pockets on the back for easy hanging if I choose. I used this tutorial from Patchwork Pottery.

Thank you for visiting today! I hope you choose to follow me or come back and visit anytime!

Take a minute to check out the other awesome projects today! You won't be sorry.

  33. Your chickadees are amazing! Do they come to your backyard feeder in real life as well? Your fabric choices are perfect and I agree, that the tree needed leaves. Good for you trying something that was out of your comfort zone! Sometimes these hops give just the prodding we need?

  41. I can hardly believe this is your first applique. I've taken a couple of hand applique classes and after some practice, I'm just starting to get the hang of it. I do belong to a stitch group with five members and we usually do applique. I can only imagine the fun you had on your trip to Sisters. I had two sisters-in-law that live in OR and always wished I could go visit and take the excursion to Sisters with them. They compete with each other in their quilting. One is very artistic and the other is very precise, having been an engineer. I wish they would learn to collaborate instead of compete. Thanks for participating in the hop and being a great creative inspiration. I hope to see you in more hops.

    1. Thank you for your kind words! yep my first applique. It wasn't too hard, but time consuming. I don't think I'd enjoy it on a larger project. I haven't tried hand applique just yet. Maybe it would be easier? who knows. I'll add it to my list of "some days." Sisters is a great little place so if you ever get the opportunity to visit, go. I loved it! Thank you for visiting today!

    1. Hi Lou! Thank you for the kind words and for visiting today! We LOVE our fountain! I think it's called and Infinity fountain. The water comes up through the middle and pours down the sides with very little splashing. We have to make sure there is water in it every 2 weeks or so (it sits on a grate dug into the ground where the pump and stuff is located). We still have to "swish" around the top but not much. The birds love it!

  46. First time at applique and you did a terrific job. That is a very cute wall hanging.I see that you also live in California. Love your fountain. We have 2 birdbaths, 2 birdfeeders, 2 hummingbird feeders and lots of little birdie visitors. I would love to replace a birdbath with a fountain. Are they difficult to keep clean?

    1. Thank you for visiting today and for the kind words! We live in Northern California east of San Francisco. We love our fountain! It is very easy to maintain. It's called an infinity fountain (I think) the water runs down the sides with very little over splashing. We have to fill it about every other week (through a grate underneath to a basin where the pump is in the ground) and just swish it around in the top. Easy peasy!
